M:Soundtrack presents! First concert of the year we welcome the Montreal born singer & banjo player Kaïa Kater to Berlin - Bringing with her influences from Appalachia, the Caribbean and her home in Montreal, Quebec. On Monday 02.02.26 we offer a beatiful intimate concert and a a beginning of the M:Soundtrack year where hybridity is part of the series DNA. We will welcome a Special Guest, Paper Beats Scissors who also spent many years in Montreal and is now based in Berlin!

Kaïa Kater Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian artist Kaia Kater has earned acclaim from NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, and No Depression for her jazz-inflected voice, artful banjo work, and vivid songwriting. Drawing on roots in Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia—as well as her ties to the Canadian folk scene, her years studying Appalachian music, her father’s Grenadian heritage, and her recent film composition work—Kaia crafts music that reflects her rich, diverse background.

Her new album, Strange Medicine (Free Dirt Records / acrönym), marks a period of reinvention. Co-produced with Joe Grass, it expands her sound with cinematic arrangements and features guests Taj Mahal, Allison Russell, and Aoife O’Donovan. The album honors the power of women and oppressed peoples throughout history while offering intimate reflections from Kaia’s own life.

She also wrote and performed music for the new film, My Dead Friend Zoe (Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris).
"...plaintive, mesmerizing...writes and performs with the skill of a folk-circuit veteran..." -Rolling Stone
"You want some authenticity in your folk music or bluegrass – I give you Kaia Kater." -No Depression

Special Guest - Under the moniker Paper Beat Scissors Tim Crabtree stitches delicate and intricate tapestries of songs threaded through by an unmistakable haunting voice. Over 3 albums the Montréal-based Brit has worked with members of Arcade Fire, featured on the cover CD of Rolling Stone and been labelled "startling and beautiful" by legendary BBC Radio DJ "Whispering" Bob Harris. 2021 saw the release of his first collection of songs in a second language - the Spanish album "la Mitad".

The complexity of Paper Beat Scissors' music both belies and serves its simple aim: to create a point of emotional connection and communication with the listener; To hold a space to disappear, briefly, inside the spells it casts.
